Laura McGladrey, PMHNP
Consultative support and coaching for performance, stress injury, recovery and maximizing resilience.
I found my way to Colorado from the Pacific Northwest after nursing school, drawn by a life spent under the stars, on rivers, in the mountains, and in service to others. Over the years, I built a career that blended adventure, medicine, and education - teaching wilderness medicine, working as an emergency department nurse and nurse practitioner, guiding in remote environments, and supporting humanitarian and international health initiatives. Those experiences were deeply meaningful and shaped who I am today. They also taught me firsthand what it means to live at the intersection of purpose, performance, and service - where fulfillment and exhaustion can often coexist.
After years of emergency response, wilderness expeditions, international travel, and athletic pursuits, I reached a point that many high-performing people eventually encounter. I was proud of the work I had done and grateful for everything it had given me, yet I found myself physically, mentally, and emotionally depleted. I couldn't quite find a name for what I was experiencing. It wasn't burnout alone - it felt more like a combination of chronic stress, accumulated trauma, and a growing disconnect between my values and the way I was living. Seeking answers, I returned to school to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Through my work with first responders, healthcare professionals, mountain athletes, and tactical communities, I began to recognize a common pattern that emerging military research describes as stress injury. That framework transformed the way I understood my own experience and continues to shape the way I care for others today.
My approach is grounded in the belief that awareness creates choice. When we understand how stress affects our minds, bodies, relationships, and performance, we are better equipped to respond before overwhelm becomes injury. I take a strengths-based, collaborative approach that honors each person's resilience, experience, and capacity for growth. Together, we develop practical strategies that integrate clinical best practices, habit science, and sustainable resilience skills to support long-term well-being and performance. In a world that often asks us to give more than we can replenish, my goal is to help clients build the awareness, skills, and support systems needed to flourish—not just survive—throughout their careers, pursuits, and lives.
